In questo volume sono raccolti tutti gli scritti mauroliciani riguardanti le teorie musicali che ci sono pervenuti. Si tratta di materiali piuttosto eterogenei - brevi appunti e calcoli insieme a compendi di più ampio respiro; testi autografi e a stampa; scritti giovanili e scritti risalenti agli ultimi anni di Maurolico - suddivisi in tre sezioni. 1. Imperfecta de musica: sotto questo titolo sono riuniti gli scritti e i frammenti di argomento musicale contenuti nel ms. autografo Par. Lat. 7462 conservato presso la Bibliothèque Nationale de France. A essi si deve aggiungere un breve appunto, anch'esso autografo, ritrovato nel ms. San Pantaleo 115 della Biblioteca Nazionale centrale 'Vittorio Emanuele II' di Roma. 2. Musicae traditiones carptim collectae: il testo pubblicato a Venezia nel 1575 alle pp. 145-160 degli Opuscula mathematica. 3. Capita de musica a Christophoro Clavio congesta: un opuscolo - il "Boetianae musicae compendium" - e altri brevi scritti, di mano di Cristoforo Clavio, contenuti nel ms. Fondo Curia 2052 dell'Archivio della Pontificia Università Gregoriana di Roma. I testi appaiono assai eterogenei quanto a date di composizione, diffusione e livello di elaborazione, ma presentano al contrario molte affinità quanto al contenuto: in vari casi si ha addirittura una corrispondenza ad verbum fra i tre testi. L'edizione critica degli scritti è preceduta da un'ampia introduzione in cui vengono considerate le varie testimonianze relative agli studi musicali di Maurolico e a come si sia costituito un corpus musicale mauroliciano. Sono poi indicati i rapporti fra i vari testimoni ed è analizzata la diffusione degli scritti. In conclusione, i criteri che hanno guidato l'allestimento della presente edizione.

This volume contains all of Maurolico's surviving writings regarding musical theories. The nature of the material is rather varied: brief notes and calculations together with essays of greater scope; texts both autograph and printed, writings both youthful and dating to the final years of Maurolico's life. The material is arranged in three sections: 1. Imperfecta de musica : this is the title we have given to the collection of writings and fragments regarding music contained in the autograph manuscript Par. Lat. 7462, housed in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. To these must be added a brief note, also autograph, discovered in manuscript San Pantaleo 115 of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale 'Vittorio Emanuele II' in Rome. 2. Musicae traditiones carptim collectae : the text published in Venice in 1575 in pp. 145-160 of the Opuscula mathematica. 3. Capita de musica a Christophoro Clavio congesta : This is the title given to the collection comprising a short treatise - the 'Boetianae musicae compendium' - and other brief texts. This collection, copied by the hand of Christopher Clavius, is found in Fondo Curia 2052 of the Historical Archives of the Pontifical Gregorian University. While these writings are quite varied as regards their dates of composition, means of dissemination, and level of completeness, they do however show many affinities in terms of content: there are even several cases of ad verbum correspondence between texts. The critical edition of the writings is preceded by an an extensive introduction in which the various documents that testify to Maurolico's studies and how a corpus of his musical writings has been established are treated; next, the relationships between the various documents and the dissemination of the writings are discussed. Finally, a discussion of the criteria used in preparing this present edition.
