This volume’s roots go back to 2016, when the three editors shared the idea of organizing an international conference on China and the West in transcultural perspectives that went beyond the chronological limits between the last two dynasties and the advent of the Republican era. The aim was to focus the attention of scholars on the phenomena of transculturation that were related to, or bore an impact upon, the vision of the human being, and the practice and / or theory of ‘letters’ in China during or after its interaction with the West, first understood as Europe, and then enlarged since the nineteenth century to include the United States of America. The conference took place in Rome in 2019 and this volume gathers a selection of ten essays out of the almost thirty papers presented during the event. The concepts of ‘humanity’ and ‘letters’ constitute the thematic guidelines of the book, which contains three papers related to the transcultural encounter between Western and Chinese visions of the human being, whether as an individual or a societal being (Thierry Meynard, Giulia Falato, Yuan-ju Liu), and seven papers broadly related to ‘letters’; most of them refer to literary practises, styles, and concepts (Sher-shiueh Li, Federica Casalin, Renata Vinci, Shuo-win Chen, and Jack C. Yue with Curtis Lin), while two cases address issues on cultural translation (Paolo De Troia and Hui-hung Chen).
