This volume wants to offer some reflections on a contemporary narrative genre, crime and detective fiction, and more specifically on that traditionally pivotal constituent of all crime narratives, that is the figure of the detective. It does so through a series of case studies, a corpus of fictional writings by European authors published since the end of the 20th century and into the 21st. Many of the ‘fundamental’ principles, certified by over a century of consolidated critical tradition, are superseded, and texts explore territories well beyond the confines that contain the range of permutations catalogued through decades of scholarly activity. Crime narratives give voice to pressing concerns that trouble our cultures, they are ‘the new social novel’; they engage with complex philosophical issues, inviting a reflection on questions such as individual ethics and responsibility, the relation between justice and law, gender politics and dynamics. With this evolution in mind, the contributors to this collection analyse authors and texts that ‘play’ with the rulebook of crime writing and with the attention on the figure of the detective. The essays, for the most part examining works from the 21st century, demonstrate that the genre continues to grow, not only in volume of publications, but most importantly in formal richness and sophistication, and that it attracts the attention of a growing body of scholars interested in analysing narratives that demonstrate maturity, inventiveness, and a strong drive for literary innovation.

Questo volume vuole offrire alcune riflessioni su un genere narrativo contemporaneo, il giallo e la narrativa poliziesca, e più specificamente su quel tradizionale cardine di tutte le narrazioni poliziesche che è la figura del detective. Questo viene fatto attraverso una serie di casi di studio, un corpus di scritti narrativi di autori europei pubblicati dalla fine del ventesimo fino al ventunesimo secolo. Molti dei principi ‘fondamentali’, certificati da oltre un secolo di consolidata tradizione critica, vengono superati e i testi esplorano territori ben oltre i confini che delimitano l’insieme delle variazioni catalogate in decenni di attività accademica. La letteratura sul crimine dà voce a preoccupazioni pressanti che turbano le nostre culture, rappresenta ‘il nuovo romanzo sociale’; si confronta con complesse questioni filosofiche, invitando a una riflessione su questioni come l'etica e la responsabilità individuale, il rapporto tra giustizia e diritto, le politiche e le dinamiche di genere. Con questa evoluzione in mente, i contributori di questa raccolta analizzano autori e testi che ‘giocano’ con le regole della scrittura poliziesca e con l'attenzione sulla figura del detective. I saggi, che per lo più esaminano opere del XXI secolo, dimostrano che il genere continua a crescere, non solo in volume di pubblicazioni, ma soprattutto in ricchezza formale e raffinatezza, e che attira l'attenzione di un crescente numero di studiosi interessato ad analizzare storie che dimostrano maturità, inventiva e una forte spinta all'innovazione letteraria.
