The present volume collects the proceedings of the conference The Study of South Asia: between Antiquity and Modernity, Parallels and Comparisons. The Coffee Break Conference II. The meeting, as well as the present proceedings, is a further step in the path established with the conference The Study of Asia: between antiquity and modernity (June 2010). The two events share most of the organising staff and the same theoretical premises. The Coffee Break Project has been started by a group of young researchers on Asian Studies and it has been conceived since the beginning as an open challenge to some well-known and "petrified" research criteria of traditional academia. The purpose of these papers is to make the authors and their audience aware of the plurality of possible methodological approaches within every field of study and of the non-neutrality of the choice of one approach over another. It might also be possible to find some common grounds between the way a philologist and an economist conceive their works. All participants of the Coffee Break Conferences must be open to curiosity and criticism. The panels have been conceived and organized by researchers working on South Asia who have, in most cases, opened the discussion to contributions from different contexts.

Questo volume raccoglie gli Atti del convegno Lo studio dell'Asia del Sud: tra antichità e modernità. Paralleli e Confronti. Coffee Break Conferenza II. L'incontro, così come gli Atti che si presentano, è un ulteriore passo nel percorso stabilito con il convegno Lo studio dell'Asia: tra antichità e modernità (giugno 2010). I due eventi condividono la maggior parte dello staff organizzativo e le stesse premesse teoriche. Il progetto Coffee Break è stato avviato da un gruppo di giovani ricercatori nell'ambito degli studi asiatici ed è stato concepito fin dall'inizio come una sfida aperta ad alcuni criteri di ricerca ben noti e "pietrificati" del mondo accademico tradizionale. Lo scopo di questi lavori è rendere gli autori e il loro pubblico consapevoli della pluralità di possibili approcci metodologici all'interno di ogni campo di studio e della non-neutralità della scelta di un approccio rispetto all'altro. Potrebbe anche essere possibile trovare alcuni punti comuni tra il modo in cui un filologo e un economista concepiscono i loro lavori. Tutti i partecipanti delle Coffee Break Conferences devono essere aperti alla curiosità e alla critica. I pannelli sono stati concepiti e organizzati da ricercatori che lavorano sull'Asia meridionale e che hanno, nella maggior parte dei casi, aperto il dibattito a contributi provenienti da contesti diversi.
